Cynthia is an Episcopal priest, writer, retreat and Wisdom School teacher, widely acclaimed as one of the leading contemporary teachers of Christian Nonduality. She is the author of eight books, including her most recent, The Heart of Centering Prayer, Christian Nonduality in Theory and Practice, which has been hailed by Fr. Thomas Keating as “a major contribution to the Centering Prayer movement and to inter-spiritual dialogue.”  Cynthia also serves as a core faculty member for the Living School in Albuquerque, together with Richard Rohr and James Finley.  She also loves time in her hermitage and to be sailing the seas…   This will be her seventh visit Downunder.

From Narrative Self to Witnessing Self

..... the journey toward Personhood

This meditation-based teaching retreat will offer both a theoretical and a practical inquiry into the gradual transition from a more limited sense of selfhood anchored in personal story-telling and drama to a more spacious and less cognitively constructed selfhood, widely known as “The Witness.” While the whole concept of witnessing presence is widely recognised in Eastern spiritual practice, it still presents a stumbling block for many Western Christians, who cannot imagine a “true self” without specifically defining features and a personal narrative. Our retreat, approached from the perspective of Christian nonduality, will attempt to help advancing practitioners approach this threshold with more confidence and ease.

While the retreat is open to experienced meditators on all paths (and an established meditation practice is a prerequisite), it will hold particular interest for practitioners of Centering Prayer, where it will unpack some of the key ideas in Cynthia’s acclaimed The Heart of Centering Prayer: Nondual Christianity in Theory and Practice, particularly the notion of “nondual personhood.”
