Thomas Merton's Exploration of the Desert Landscape of the Human Heart

Rev Christopher Pagewith Christopher Page

Thomas Merton 1915-1968 was a pioneer in deepening awareness of contemplative teaching in the Christian tradition. This pioneering spirit is evident in his presentation of the desert wisdom of the 4th and 5th centuries through his translation of desert stories in The Wis-dom of the Desert. This evening will be an exploration of Merton's encounter with the desert tradition as it lead him towards the dis-covery of his "own true self in Christ." As we examine Merton's use of these texts we will find wisdom for our own journey in the land-scape of the human heart.
